Kingston is the capital and largest city of Jamaica and is located on the southeastern coast of the island country. Kingston is Jamaica's cosmopolitan capital at the foot of the broad Liguanea Plains. Founded following the disastrous Port Royal earthquake of 1692, it is the centre of government and commerce and offers a comprehensive variety of attractions for visitors. Set against the backdrop of the 7,402-foot Blue Mountain Peak, Kingston is connected to the old buccaneer haunt of Port Royal by a spit of land known as the Palisadoes which encompasses the city's international airport.
Also nearby is Spanish Town. For nearly two hundred and fifty years the town has inherited a legacy of historic architecture which includes the oldest cathedral in the Western Hemisphere. In Kingston the night life is centered on Knutsford Boulevard the "Kingston Strip".
A great deal of Kingston is pure shanty town, but again one sees striking contrasts, especially in New Kingston, situated between the teeming downtown and mid town areas and the fading but still gracious suburbs of St. Andrew. New Kingston is a business area which embodies the best of modern tropical town planning, graciously combining high rise buildings and well-groomed gardens with the soaring Blue Mountains as a backdrop.
